Holding water is where fish are right now, even when they're not feeding. Outside of active hatches and feeding windows, trout retreat to slack pockets where they can sit for hours without burning calories.
Classic holding water:
- The middle of a deep pool, on the slow side of the seam.
- Behind a boulder where the current splits and creates a calm pocket.
- Inside a bend, where the current accelerates around the outside.
- Under cut banks and root wads, where slow water meets overhead cover.
When a hatch starts, fish move from holding water into feeding lies. Knowing which water is which lets you find fish during slow stretches and predict where they'll show when bugs come off.
