Pool

A deep, slow stretch of stream where fish hold to rest and conserve energy. The bottom of a riffle is often the head of a pool.

Also calledpools

Pools are where the biggest fish in a stretch typically live. The water is deeper, slower, and offers cover from overhead predators. Fish in pools spend most of their day not feeding — they move into the head (where a riffle dumps in) or the tail (where the pool runs back out) to eat, then retreat.

Cast the head and tail. Skip the middle.
