Midge

A tiny mosquito-like insect that hatches year-round. The smallest commercial midge patterns go down to size 28 — a serious cold-water and tailwater staple.

Also calledmidges

Midges are the cold-water default. When mayflies and caddis aren't around (winter, deep summer in tailwaters), trout still feed on midges — emerging from cold riffles, bouncing in clusters above the surface, and going down as pupae or adults.

Midge fishing rewards small flies, fine tippets, and patience. A size 22 zebra midge is the workhorse pattern.
