Emerger

A fly imitating an insect transitioning from underwater nymph to winged adult. Floats in or just under the surface film, matching trout that are eating in that exact window.

Also calledemergers

The split second between "nymph" and "adult" — when an insect cracks its shell at the surface and unfolds its wings — is the most vulnerable moment of its life. Trout know this and key on emergers during a hatch, sometimes refusing both nymphs and full duns.

A trailing-shuck pattern is a common emerger style: it imitates an adult that's halfway out of its nymph case.
