hatch

Dun

The first winged adult stage of a mayfly, riding the water as it dries its wings before flying off. The phase trout key on during a mayfly hatch.

Also calledduns

After a mayfly emerger breaks through the surface film, it floats downstream with upright wings until they dry enough to fly. That's the dun stage. It's also the most catchable: the bug is fully exposed, fish are trained on the shape, and a Parachute Adams or Sparkle Dun matches it cleanly.

Mayflies later molt into spinners — their reproductive stage. Different fly, different rise form.
