Indicator

A floating attachment on the leader that signals when a fish takes a sub-surface fly. Like a fly-fishing bobber, but lower-profile and tunable for depth.

Also calledstrike indicator · strike-indicator · indicators

When you nymph, the fly is invisible underwater — you can't see the take. The indicator (yarn, foam, or a small synthetic ball) sits on the surface, and any pause, dip, or twitch means strike.

Set the indicator depth so the fly drifts at the bottom: roughly 1.5× the water depth.
